Notes: Vibrant and lively on the nose with alluring nuances of fresh flowers and berry fruits. On the palate you’re treated with pepper herbs, fresh minerality and delightful tannin. The richness and depth of this Grenache erupts with every sip, while conveying texture and balance.
Wine: 2020 Black Darter, Central Coast
Rhone Red Blend: 44% Grenache, 28% Mourvedre, 28% Carignan
Vineyard: The Grenache and Mourvedre in this blend come from Machado Creek Vineyard, which is a beautiful landscape tucked into the eastern side of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The soil is red clay loam. The Carignan is from a small family owned vineyard called, Circle B Vineyard, this warm climate estate makes for spice driven wines.
Winemaking: The Carignan was completely whole-cluster fermented, while the Grenache and Mourvedre were fully de-stemmed. We did daily pump-overs during cold soak (2 days). Once fermentation started we switched to gentle punching downs. Primary fermentation lasted a total of 14 days. We used 25% new French oak and aged for 18 months. The final blend also has a total of 21% whole-cluster.

Notes: The Grenache in this wine is giving off notes of orange marmalade, bright raspberry, and white pepper spice. The Mourvedre brings a nice lift of lavender and blue fruits. All while the Carignan brings a light and crunchy weight to the wine with notes of baking spices. The palate is driven by spice and accentuated by bright red fruit.

Winemaking: The Syrah and Grenache were harvested, fermented, pressed and aged in barrel separately for 16 months.The Syrah was 100% whole cluster fermented. The Grenache was 30% whole cluster fermented. At bottling we blended the two lots together and let them age in bottle for an additional 16 months.

Notes: Aromatics of white flowers, crushed earth, cinnamon, niçoise olive, subtle brine to those olives! Notes of concentrated black currant, orange oil, delicate tannins, and a bright pop of acidity on the palate. Finishes clean, long,and bright!

Notes: Deep and brooding aromatics with subtle sun drenched exposed dusty rock. Notes of coriander, pink pepper corn, lavender, and black raspberry in the nose. Flavors of black olive and blackberry jam kissed with a bright and briny acidity. Finishes clean with bright floral notes lifting the palate!

Winemaking: Gently destemmed, pumped over first 1/3 of fermentation. 14 days in the fermentor and pressed when the tannins have just begun to soften and coat the whole mouth.

Notes: Boysenberry, root beer, peachy aromatics. Dense chewy tannins, fruit is expressive yet tamed by the dark brooding nature of this varietal. Pretty little spice and long textured finish. This is our work horse wine, every day red wine that pleases with every sip. This is our 11th year working and farming at Machado Creek Vineyard, this block is all head trained (meaning no wires) and leads to a really dynamic expressive fruit.
